Thought of the Day 2010 #173 - Apricots

Last year I was overrun with apricots...I made so many jams, butters, syrups, juices, etc. This year we had a late freeze which killed most of the apricot buds. I have seen 10 apricots, two of which were buggy, a hazard of growing things without pesticide. Bottom line, a bad apricot year. It is probably a good thing that I stopped selling jams on Etsy...I would have no stock! Not sure how well the other fruit crops will do yet. I know there's apples and some peaches, but no idea how many will make it to ripe for us rather than birdie treats.

I've been getting up this week before the sun fully rises. I have some additional work that needs to get done, and I find doing it in the wee hours I'm more productive than I am working late. Really, there's nothing to this post aside from the fact that because I'm getting up so early, I don't have any thoughts to share at this hour and I really need to go to sleep.

Thought of the Day 2010 #169 - Blogspot

Blogspot is becoming the website graveyard of the internet. The hopes and dreams of millions of bloggers died a slow death as they ran out of ideas, ambitions or password memories.

In the early days of the internet, people flocked to Geocities to plant their ideas soundly in the digital realm. Long about 2000, most of those sites gathered dust on the "under construction" moving gifs.

Now, Blogspot has taken on the role as the home of broken dreams. People slowly realize that they are a little late to the blog party and will never make the cash of Dooce or the Pioneer Woman. Maybe they didn't have the same talent or maybe they just didn't have the tenacity. Whatever was missing, it really is kind of sad to see those dreams of greatness die in a pool of apathy.

You can have dinner with three people alive or dead, so who are you going to invite for your dream dinner??

Only three? Dang it. Well, Mom would be one...she's been dead for over twenty years, so it would be good to catch up. I think I'll invite Maya Angelou, 'cuz she can spin a tale while making me think and laugh. And, as a wildcard, I'm going with Thomas Jefferson - multitalented dude that he was.

Thought of the Day 2010 #168 - Jersey Shore

I watched a couple of episodes of Jersey Shore tonight in an attempt to grasp the pop culture references to Snooki and "guidos." I have come to the conclusion that these people are from another planet, and any attempt to fully understand will be futile.

What is your favourite font? And why?

Oh, like potato chips, I can't have just one! I love just looking at fonts...all sorts of fonts. They're often emotive and inspirational. Of course overuse of multiple fonts in a particular document or site drives me batty. Impact is achieved with minimalist usage.

I like going to this site for new font selections: http://new.myfonts.com/hotnewfonts/. There are a lot of sites like that online, but that's the one I go to.

It's probably easiest to pick a font that I dislike than my favorite. Comic Sans makes my skin crawl.
The sans in the name = no enjoyment. It has nothing to do with the lack of serifs.

Thought of the Day 2010 #167 - Wrong State

I fear I live in the wrong state when individuals applaud others breaking the law because it fits their personal ideals.

As a backstory, a week or so ago a list of illegal immigrants was compiled by a couple of women working for the state unemployment and social service benefits department (name of department changed for definition sake). This list of 1,300 families was sent to various other departments, media and law enforcement. The list included confidential information about these people. It is wrong on so many levels. Invasion of privacy is just the beginning. Who knows what sort of potential harm can come to the families "outed" on this list if it gets in the hands of militant anti-immigration crazies? Just not right.

Not right and yet there are crazies posting online and communicating in other ways in support of the law breaking, short-sighted idiots making the list. I can't help but think this is akin to outing Jews in Hitler's Germany.

I seriously wonder if the women were paid by an outside group to create the list? They were state workers, so there was probably plenty of room for financial gain. That would add even more drama to an ugly situation.

Shortly before leaving for Vegas, I purchased a huge bag of fresh, local cherries. They are so good when fresh, fresh. There was no way to eat all of the cherries, so I decided to do the easiest method of preserving them -- freezing them whole. They make lovely summer snacks that way. Grab a handful and munch 'em in the sunshine. So good!

When did you lose your V card? is it an interesting story?

I was a late bloomer -- mid-twenties. Not that unusual of a story, unfortunately.

The wild berry smoothie is the best...so, so good. I like to pretend it is healthy. It is better than ice cream, I believe. Anyway, if you would like to become addicted, the dealers...err...McDonald's restaurants are giving away little "hits" (5 oz cups) of the smoothies on July 22-24. Go ahead, try it...I dare you.

Thought of the Day 2010 #162 - One Note

I'm a bit bored with the one note fat blog. How many different ways can one say the same thing over and over?? Fat hatred is wrong. Discrimination against fat people is wrong. Fat men are discriminated against. Look here, people discriminated against fat people. Fat women are hated. Mimi hates fat people. Etc, etc, etc.

Get it, got it, and the people who do not get it are not reading your blog. Well, except for Mimi Roth...it is the only thing she is completely ravenous about.

It's equally as bad to try to slog through diet blogs. I ate this today... I lost an ounce. Today I ate this...I gained an ounce. *pokes eyes out* Do these people have anything better to contemplate in their lives?

While I don't think my blog would ever win any sort of award for writing, I do hope that it is remotely entertaining, occasionally thought provoking, varied, and that is has more than one note....not quite a melody, mind you, but more like a ditty that pops in your head when you least expect it.

I know we expect a lot from our vehicles, but is there anything more annoying than a car breaking down when you are far from home? (OK, fine, there are a lot more annoying things in this world, but still...) (Oh, and it wasn't my car and I wasn't in the vehicle when it misbehaved, but I was party to picking up the pieces after the beast stopped doing its intended job.)

I have been experiencing some intense dreams this past week. Dramatic, long winded fabulous dreams. The specifics escape me shortly after waking, and all I know is that I want more!! So fun.

Not to sound too obsessed with things that you keep finding, but did you ever locate the owner of that lost pubic hair that came with your brand new dryer? And out of curiosity, what colour was it, because I keep tabs on all of mine.

I have not located the owner...YET. It was black or very dark brown. I could pull it from the garbage and run a DNA analysis on it. Would you care to donate a DNA sample for comparison purposes? We could rule you out fairly quickly and quite definitively that way.

I can't be the only online shopper who is a bit creeped out by the emails from websites that state, "Yoooohooo, you left something in your online shopping cart. Come back...."
Just creepy, big brotherish marketing. I vow not to return when they pull that shit.

Thought of the Day 2010 #158 - Giant Marshmallows

I bought some giant marshmallows at the grocery store today in preparation for some giant s'mores. While in the checkout line, the guy behind me saw them, scooted past me, scooped up the package and said, "I gotta see these." At first I thought it was amusing that he was compelled to touch them, but then I thought, "What the heck...this dude is fondling my marshmallows." I then realized this was not the first time this thought crossed my mind.

Thought of the Day 2010 #157 - Symbolism

I am pretty concerned when people look for deep hidden meaning in symbols, or put too much stock in them. As an example, a flag is just a piece of cloth. The symbolic representation of the flag could be patriotism, for instance. Mishandling a flag does not equal disrespect for a country, it is solely disrespectful to the fabric. If you loooooove fabric as much as I do, this could be a problem, but no one loves fabric as much as I do, and the dragging of the flag does not bother me, so clearly it should not bother you.

As another example, "666", aka "the sign of the beast." Sometimes numbers fall together in sequence. They just do. "967" could bother me if I choose to let it bother me. It does not. It is just three numbers in a row. If Joey down the street told me that "967" is the symbolic number for evil, I would think 1. Joey is a nut job or 2. Huh, maybe some nut job told Joey that and he choose to believe it. I would not go out of my way to avoid "967" just because Joey said I should. The same logic could and should apply to "666."

These are just two examples, and there are a lot more out there...

If you find yourself overreacting to symbols, take a step back and look for the genuine meaning behind someone's actions or to the symbol in front if you. Remove your emotions before you act from your gut when a symbol is involved. Sometimes a finger is just a finger.
