Merry Xmas to all who celebrate. What was the best gift you ever gave and why?

Hmmm, I guess the recipients would have to make the call. The one gift given that made me feel best? A couple of years ago we gave a neighborhood family that was struggling a surprise Santa-like gift drop. We picked out and wrapped gifts for all of the kids and the parents, and anonymously dropped them at their door late, late on Christmas eve. It's good to be a genuine Santa!

Thought of the Day 2010 #232 - Sin

The only "sin" lacking in the world is sincerity.

With the Christmas deadline coming up, do you have any tips to help us get our holiday shopping and cooking done on time? You seem to do such a great job of it, I thought maybe you could help us out.

Shop online for gifts. Get grocery shopping done at odd hours to avoid lines.

Cooking? Plan ahead and make a prioritized list. Then edit it down. Eliminate the maybes and time suckers if they don't fit in your timeline. No one will notice.

Oh, and finally, don't procrastinate. That's always the trick, eh?

I took this picture this past weekend along a SLC canal road. A hanging nutsack nest isn't the best idea, but it does provide for a wild ride when it's windy.

Thought of the Day 2010 #231 - Lurve

It is funny how some things just *grab* me. I could look at a thousand fabric prints and 500 of them are *ok* and 500 are just uuuuuglllleee. All those options, but none say *lurve* to my personal aesthetic. This chair, however, said *lurve* the minute I saw it. The fabric just makes me happy. Ahhhhhh. So pretty. I had to have it. There was no option. That chair came home with me.

Thought of the Day 2010 #231 - Cleanliness and CSI

*zoom in on the hair on the floor the body on the floor is visible in the background* *CSI agent looks around the floor and spots THE hair, gets out his tweezers and evidence bag. He carefully places the hair in the bag and says, "I think I've got something.* Yeah, typical CSI type scene on television. I have no idea if that sort of thing happens in real life, but it does make me wonder -- are murdered clean freaks more likely to have their killers found? I was swiffering the floor in the living rooms today and found a lot of hair. I'm sure most of it is mine, but if someone were to kill me in my own house on a day where the floors were dirtier than this afternoon, would they even bother to go through the dustpan? When I had Kipper, hair was even more of an issue. Oh, and let's say my body is missing, but the spray for possible blood patterns in the bathroom? I would think that they will find old blood patterns in there, but just from really bad period blotches that have been cleaned up but not with bleach, so still detectable. They would probably have me declared dead due to all of the blood and spend thousands of man hours searching for my body. All this while I'm off on a tropical island and *forgot* to tell anyone I was leaving. Point to all of this? If you're going to get murdered, do so with a clean house. Its all in the planning, people! Do not be unprepared.

Are you ever sorry for lack of PotWs?

Sorry? No, I wouldn't use that term.

What gifts are you hoping to recieve for Christmas? And a follow up question: Were you 'naughty' or 'nice' this year?

Describe the day you felt your sexiest? (what were you wearing etc.)

I had to think long and hard about this. It's been a while. I would say it starts with silky hair from a deep conditioning, and clothes that fit just right -- not too tight nor too loose...fitted and skimming. Combine that with some sort of personal/professional accomplishment and a random flirt from a stranger, you have a good sexy day.

Thought of the Day 2010 #226 - Tech Neck

Using handheld tech devices (smart phones, ipads, etc) for hours on end is tiring for my neck. I'm always looking down to use them. I can't be the only one! I imagine in a few years, or if it's not already happening now, that chiropractors will be seeing a huge leap in neck issues. GPs will probably see increases in muscle stress related headaches and neck compression induced hand numbness. It's going to be a problem, I tell ya!

Thought of the Day 2010 #225 - Hunting

I can't wrap my brain around hunting as fun. Killing for pleasure and not necessity. I just caught a snippet of an outdoor sportsman's show displaying the family *fun* of hunting with the kids. The dogs ran ahead, a pheasant flies up, and the kids all start shooting. Someone hits it, and laughter, shouting ensues. Good times were had by all...over a death. I dunno. It just makes my skin crawl. The show host is heard saying something like the, "the whole family is always elated when the pheasant surprises them by flying out of the brush.". So, ummmm...can't they all go out to the wild to enjoy the pheasant "surprises" without wanting to kill it???

Thought of the Day 2010 #224 - Cuisinart

Last year, I bought a really pricey food processor from Williams-Sonoma. About a month or so ago, I was working on chopping some peppers and I couldn't turn the thing off. A ghost was in the machine! I had to unplug it to kill it. It's an odd feeling when an appliance behaves badly...ya just can't trust it anymore! I didn't use it for a few weeks, and then this past week, I needed to use it for several recipes. The ghost in the machine did not go away. I needed to use it, so I ended up training the bad dog to do "pulse" by lifting the lid, I effect stalling it out through it's safety feature. Eh, ya do what ya gotta do.

Today, I called Williams-Sonoma to inquire about the specific date I had purchased it. I figured it would have at least a year long warranty, and I was hoping I was still less than a calendar year out.

The customer service person looked up my info and found that I ordered it last June. Crap! Past a year's time. The CS person put me on hold to see if there was something they could do. While on hold, I started peeking through online reviews. Aha! I am not the only person with a defective control panel. Several reviews mentioned the inability to turn it off.

CS person comes back on the phone and apologizes--they cannot help's been over a year, and it's probably not working right due to "normal wear and tear". Oh, that sucks. I probably only used it a dozen times over the past year. Price per use is about $30. Ouch. I mention I saw several other users with the same issue on their site. I then inquire whether or not they have a number for a repair facility?

CS person puts me on hold again. I'm thinking it will cost a ton to ship it somewhere...and then, who knows how much they'll charge. I was feeling I bought a money pit. Grrr.

CS person comes back asking me what I want? What i want?? I said I wanted a machine that works. That's all.

She then tells me they are going to arrange for a UPS pickup in the morning, and that they will exchange my defective model with a new one.

I was shocked. Going from "you're out of luck" to "we'll exchange it, and pay shipping both ways" had me dumbfounded...and pleased.

I know they technically didn't need to take the return as it had been over a year. Kudos for Williams-Sonoma customer service for coming through, eventually. Well, I guess I better hold my breath until I get my new one...and when it actually works for more than a year's time. At least at this point, I have high hopes!

Thought of the Day 2010 #222 - Tasks

This week is crazy busy for me at work and at home. I feel at times I let myself get mired down by the details of the task more than the effort it takes to do the task itself. I worry about the potential success and or failure more than I should, too. I wish I were able to do, do, do, and not stress about things. I should probably count myself lucky that I am able to work through the muck most of the time. I know that for some, the details are completely overwhelming and they end up in a nearly catatonic state. I'm not there...yet...

In high school, yes. I was a major joiner. I was in drama and Thespians, voted president of Thespians in my senior year. Chemistry club so I could geek-out. Thought of the Day 2010 #217 - Chocolate Season

Chocolate season officially kicked off yesterday with the purchase of some Halloween mini candy bars. I put it off quite a while as Halloween candies started showing up in late August. I don't know why I can eat a dozen minis at a time, but never want more than one regular candy bar at any time. The psychology of it is, I'm sure, something I definitely don't want to face.
Anyway, happy chocolate season!

Looking through the 300+ gorgeous photos from my camera, it seems that the longer I look at them, the harder it is to discern the good from the not the best. What is the best and worst thing about the town you live in?

Best? Low crime, sleepy bedroom town. Worst? Rapid growth is causing heavy traffic in some areas which in turn is causing road expansion which is causing older homes to be torn down... Bottom line is that progress is favored a bit too strongly.

Thought of the Day 2010 #215 - A Bunch of Noise

Frito Lay announced recently that they are discontinuing the use of biodegradable packaging for SunChips due to noise complaints. Yes, they actually want us to believe this. Aside from that?? Yeah...that's what I thought. Crickets were overheard on the bag complaint line.

Thought of the Day 2010 #214 - More Bully Action

A few months ago, bullying was hot, hot news. This week, it's in the news again with even more kids committing suicide after being bullied.  The focus is, as it was, on ending the bullying rather than fortifying kids' emotional health. Aaaack. We will never rid society of bullies or other haters by legislating or praying for them to be gone. Just assume they will be around, and plan on giving your kids coping/fortifying tools to keep them happy, mentally healthy, and alive.
I wrote a bit more about this here:

I was such a witch!

This is from the year 2000. Our office used to put on Halloween festivities. This particular year, victims came into my office and I scared them with stuff on my huge (it was normal size at the time) computer monitor. I had a squishy ooze on the desktop that I tried to con people into touching, too. Good times.

I live within half a mile of Sonic and in seven years, I have only been there twice, so this ad doesn't really affect me beyond my funny bone. It also confirms that their food not only tasted like crap, but there is a chance it was actually made from crap.

Thought of the Day 2010 #211 - Healthcare Reform

The "Obamacare" plan recently became law, but I must confess I know no more now about it than I did when it was signed by the President. So, is it just me, or is the 2500 page plan being kept quiet? Or does no one really know what it means? I watch and read a lot of news, and this *thing* is hidden behind a veil if some sort. I went to and the official site just a few minutes ago and...again, *blank stare* it seems filled with generic platitudes. Maybe I should just read the full bill. Uh, sure... Bwahahaha.... That will never happen.

Do you end up answering all of the "Go Ahead, Ask Me" questions or do you pick and choose?

Growth in greed, ignorance, self-interest, lack of personal responsibility, and lack of empathy.

Ask me anything

What would you say is the best thing about where you live?

Hmmm...lots of good things. I live on a hobby farm, so there's lots of fresh produce, fruit, and even some fresh air. I also like the mountains to the west and east of me, both visible from the yard. Thinking a bit larger, I think Utah has a lot of natural beauty: mountains, desert, national parks like Arches or Bryce. The crime rate is pretty low, too. I've not seen a "bad neighborhood" at all in the Salt Lake Valley. The toughest neighborhoods here would get their nards kicked by a "bad neighborhood" in Minneapolis or Chicago.

Thought of the Day 2010 #206 - Fire, Fire, Fire!

This afternoon, while returning home from a little ghost town hunting, we noticed a few puffs of smoke in the Oquirrh mountains. Nothing major, but the wind was blowing HARD when we were a little south, so we kind of thought the fire might get pretty big, pretty fast.

At dinner, the sunshine was an erie yellow. The smoke which had been a long way from home had entered the valley.

Jump ahead a few more hours, the smoke is thick enough to block the sun's rays and the sunset was a brilliant red-orange.

We checked out the online news, and we found out that parts of a nearby suburb have been evacuated. So, like all good voyeurs, we got in the car and headed to the west side of the Salt Lake valley.

We drove far enough west to a view clear of smoke. The mountainside flames made it look like an active volcano. The fire was advancing to homes in several spots at least five miles apart. The strong winds even spread the fire from one mountain to another, across a fairly large valley. There's not much stopping a fire so widely spread and with strong winds as well as acres and acres of brittle brush and grass land.

Returning home tonight, there is talk of several homes destroyed. Who knows where this fire will end?

Thought of the Day 2010 #204 - Cholesterol

While I was chatting with my doctor yesterday about medicines and potential impending demise, I asked about specifics on my blood panel from two weeks ago. I wanted to know the numbers on my cholesterol. 161. Pretty dang good! And my LDL is 91. Again, ideal. So, I took the opportunity to explain that fat people do not necessarily eat five cheese burgers a day. I'm sure he's aware, but it's always good to refresh the memory when faced with a fat person.
I do find it curious that my cholesterol is as low as it is. During the summer I eat a lot less meat, but I really thought my blended iced mocha habit would have raised the numbers. Lots of milk in there! Since I last heard the specific cholesterol numbers, I was in the 170s...still good...but it seems crazy that it's dropped. Ah, well, accidental diet improvements are all good.

Thought of the Day 2010 #203 - Health Scare

I've been a bit absent from the blog because I have been spending a great deal of energy worrying, stressing and sleeping to avoid the stressing and worrying. I noticed blood in my urine the other day. Crap! There's not supposed to be any blood in your pee! Of course looking online provides plenty of fear inducing details of what could be wrong. Bladder cancer seemed to be my best bet since I really didn't have any pain as most people have with infections. Great. Bladder cancer. Ok, ok, more than likely i don't have bladder cancer, but the definitive test results aren't in yet. What I do have now, is some giant antibiotic horse pills in hopes that the blood is just a low level UTI. Cross your fingers!

Thought of the Day 2010 #202 - Infidelity

I believe that marital infidelity is less about sex and more about a lack of respect for their partner. Anyone who has been cheated upon knows the distinct pain of betrayal, I believe most people are aware of that potential pain regardless of whether they have the personal experience. Having no regard for that potential infliction of pain indicates that there's a lack of respect, plain and simple.

Any faboo recipes that have been in your family for generations? What are your faves?

Hmmm, there are none that I can think of that have been passed down more than one generation. I don't know anyone who makes bread stuffing at Thanksgiving the way my mom did and I do.

I also still make Parker House Rolls like she did, but again, I think it was something she discovered and I picked up. I've been influential with those things and I now know a few peeps here in Utah that make them regularly.
The recipe is here:
On that page there's another one that is a mom-inspired recipe: fruit pizza. Super yummy.

If Lady Gaga shows up on TeeVee next week in orange tights and a bikini, you better sue that chick for plagiarism. Have you ever been plagiarized?

Yup, a few times, but nothing too major. I've had my site slogan "borrowed" for another site, pix stolen and altered by political radicals, some pix were turned into a font, etc. I don't know if the picture usage technically counts as plagiarism, but it's somewhat similar use without prior permission.

Nope, never noticed or even heard of such a thing.

I find that most races drive poorly in pretty equal ratios. Maybe you live in a spot with more Asian drivers, so the numbers of bad Asian drivers has grown proportionately?

I suggest you get your eyes off of the drivers and focus on the road, signs, and the bumpers...'cuz those cars are out to kill you! When someone hits you with their car, the police will have an easier time finding the car by description, than finding the driver by their description.

Thought of the Day 2010 #201 - Phone Books

It's phone book season here in SoJo. I have five new phone books on my front porch. I don't want them, so I keep them there until I get them in the recycle sense bringing them in.

It seems that in these days of easily retrievable information via the Internet, that the phone book's days are over. It seems excessive to have one out on my porch, much less five.

I think the phone directories should be delivered and printed on an opt-in basis ONLY. Perhaps postcards could be sent to homes that would have prepaid postage on which a resident could mark with an X and drop in the mail? Oh, the forests this would save if only the wanted books were printed! Think of all of that stinky ink that would be eliminated, too.

Soon...soon...the wasteful books will be a distant memory....

If I ask nicely, may I request that one of the "Pics of the Week" showcase you wearing your new coloured tights? Oh, wearing one colour of tights at a time ;).

I'm glad you clarified that each color should be worn separately. And yes, you may request it. :-)

Thought of the Day 2010 #198 - Plums

More bad garden and orchard news today. There are very, very few plums on the plum tree. Tragic, really. The plums are the dark purple to almost black variety called Damson. So good. It changed me from a plum hater to a plum lovah! The tree normally produces buckets and buckets of fruit. I guess next year, I won't take it for granted.

Thought of the Day 2010 #197 - Tights

I wear dresses almost exclusively. With dresses, I wear tights a lot come cooler months. Usually black, brown and navy in coloration. Nothing too exciting because they are...or were the only available colors in my size. Tonight, however, I now have bright blue, red, teal and....ORANGE! The latter I have never seen in super sizes. So exciting!!

Thought of the Day 2010 #195 - Finally Jamming

I finally made a batch of jam today. It's been a really, really bad year for our fruit trees and raspberry bushes. There were no apricots to speak of. The only peaches ready thus far are Saturns which are a good fresh eater, but don't have enough flavor to cook into jams or other confections. Today's bounty was raspberries. Normally by this point I would have made several batches of raspberry jam, frozen lots of whole berries and panicked trying to come up with more uses for the raspberries 'cuz I was overrun with them. Not this year. Last year I canned over five hundred jars if jam. This year so far, eight. Boo.

Your "no exoskeleton" food policy is intriguing. I'm going to attempt to change your position on this issue by badgering you via Formspring while not asking you an actual question. Our Founding Fathers died for our right to eat lobsters, not just fish.

Hehehe. I think our founding fathers died to allow us to choose to worship or not worship shellfish. Their intention was to eliminate government mandated exoskeleton love. A separation of shrimp and state, as it was later known.

Thought of the Day 2010 #190 - Surprise Party Success

I didn't think it was possible to host a surprise party, and have it be a genuine surprise, but we did it yesterday! My step-daughter's 30th bday was yesterday, and thanks to last minute planning and some clever diversions (babysitting!), we did it! She was completely surprised and we had 50 people show up in a narrow window while she was babysitting. It couldn't have come together more smoothly.

Thought of the Day 2010 #188 - Stretch

Can you do the splits? Yes, you, the one reading this. Inquiring minds want to know.

Thought of the Day 2010 #187 - Credit Scores

Prior to searching for Ivan's new car, I retrieved both of our credit reports from all three agencies. You can them for free once per year from, a site owned by the FTC, yes, the government entity. So, I looked at 'em, and despite a few minor discrepancies, they seemed accurate and clean.

What sucketh much about the free reports us that you don't see the "score," just the raw details. Most loan rates are based upon the numerical score, so unless you are willing to either pay, you won't get your actual score.

Once we go to the dealer with the car we wanted to buy, they looked up our scores. They were really high, so we were able to get the lowest interest rate available, which was pretty sweet.

While our interest rate was lowered because of our good rating, it really chaps my hide that the people who really need a low rate probably are the ones with the crappiest rating. I think it's just another sign that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. While I know one can be poor and still have a decent credit rating, they typically have more debt just out of necessity. A higher debt load will significantly lower your credit score, even if the payments are made on time.

Oh, and another annoying thing. And credit company can request your credit score without you having an account with them. They are just fishing and looking for information on you that should only be given if YOU request it. I have six requests on my report from American Express. I don't have any accounts with them although I get the craptastic offers in the mail fairly often. Grrrr. Who really owns your financial information?? Clearly, it is not the individual. It's the credit agency. Are they looking after your best interest?? No, of course not. They make their money from the banks. Grrrr.

Thought of the Day 2010 #186 - More Bats

I heard tonight that the house next door had over 200 bats in the attic a few years ago. Apparently they counted them coming out one night. The hole has since been patched and the bats had to find a new home. I can't help but wonder how few flying bugs were around then? Mosquitos must have been rare! Those were the days...

What's the worst bug-bite experience you've ever had?

A few years ago at a BBQ in my honor at a friend's house in Minnesota, I was extra tasty to the mosquitos. I was covered with repellant, but that didn't stop them. I had, easily ten biting me at any one time. I was swatting, talking, and suddenly panicking. I was being eaten alive!! I had to leave...and fast. I was completely miserable until I got back to my hotel and was able to take a shower to get the stinky repellant off me and to sooth the itching.

I bought some of your jams in years past. I found one jar in my pantry marked 2008. Is it still okay to eat? should be fine, provided that the seal is still intact. Nutritional value(if any) diminishes with time.
If it happens to be a variety with nuts or chocolate, the flavor may be off, but it should still be safe to eat.

Thought of the Day 2010 #185 - Negativity

Despite my often negative bent on my TotDs, I am an overwhelmingly positive person. That's why a consistently negative person can often rub me the wrong way...a lot. I often wonder if most people have to struggle to be positive, or if most have a sunny disposition? Based upon the way much of the US treats its fellow man, I'd hasten to say they are a giant pit of emotional pain out there....and I just want to give them a BIG hug to help them get the f* over it!!

Thought of the Day 2010 #184 - Catch-up

Finally caught up to date on Photos of the Week. I'm so often behind these days...maybe it should be "Photo Selections of the Month"??

What is the most unwelcome close encounter with the animal kind you've ever had?

Hmmm...the bat from the other day was bad...came within 6 inches of my face. But, I think the worst was a couple of wild dogs that were on the property killing our chickens. I tried to scare them away by screaming at them. I didn't have my contacts in, so I didn't see they were pitbulls until they were within 10 feet of me. Luckily, as I backed away, the flailing chicken kept them occupied until I could call the police. I think the fear of wild pitbulls is pretty strong with me, so while nothing happened, I do wonder what would have happened if they decided the chickens weren't interesting anymore.

Thought of the Day 2010 #182 - Ugh Women

No, not all women. I belong to a private board on Facebook for fat women and specifically those seeking dates. While I am not there looking for dating advice, I had thought I could impart some advice or stories from my singlehood. Unfortunately, it has turned into a gossip board. At one point I saw so many, "I heard X about him from a girl who dated him, and...." that I posted a call to eliminate hearsay. I think it helped for a few days...but then...back into the gutter of gossip and speculation about individual's sexuality and orientation. Just messed up. What is really disgusting is that the women who are the worst gossips and speculators are completely convinced that such talk is completely acceptable in a semi public environment. Which, in my opinion, it is not. Nothing but damage can come from it. And, right now, the primary damage is to the reputation of these gossips. Oh, and my trust in women is even less solid than it was before. Women suck. (Obviously not ALL women, but a large number of them. ewww. Icky. Ptooey. If I were a man, I think I just might be gay.)

Thought of the Day 2010 #181 - Perseid Meteor Shower

The last couple of nights, we've been out in the desert, about an hour from Salt Lake city. It was a far enough distance to be relatively free of the city's light pollution in order to catch a good glimpse of Perseids shooting across the sky. Last night was gorgeous -- quiet, lots of meteorites, and clear skies, but a bit on the chilly side. Tonight was equally ripe with meteorites although we were out much earlier than peak time. There were a couple of problems, though -- lots of four wheel traffic and large, low flying bats. I can deal with cold, noise and traffic, but bats buzzing six inches overhead made for a short evening. They really need to learn some flying manners...

Thought of the Day 2010 #180 - Blizzard

I had a mini size Blizzard from Dairy Queen tonight. It was tasty, and probably a fair portion if it were to follow dietary strict guidelines. For me, it was a little on the smallish size. I finished it up quickly, then dreamed of returning and ordering all 25 flavors in mini size. That would be way excessive, but maybe that is DQ's clever marketing?? Dang those marketing geniuses!

Thought of the Day 2010 #179 - Peach Thieves

Peach thieving season is upon us yet again. It's the time of year when losers pull up to our yard and help themselves to the juicy peach goodness dripping from the trees. Even upon being confronted, the thieves are unapologetic. It's as if they feel they have every right to raid the trees. One car yesterday had the parents encouraging their little kids to do the stealing for them. Awesome. Not only are the parents losers, but they are passing the bad habits onto their children.

What is ridiculous is that if someone comes to the door, or catches us in the yard, we are always willing to share. All one has to do is ask, and the peaches can be had.

It's the bold-faced thieving that drives me crazy. So, today, I called the police and asked if I were to provide a license plate number, would they actually follow through and contact idiots who knowingly steal a handful or bucketful of peaches? You betcha, they will.

My photo and documenting task is ahead of me. I figure we don't need to confront, just stand in front of their car, take a photo, or just write the license down. SoJo's finest will do the rest to try to "learn 'em" that stealing is wrong.

Thought of the Day 2010 #177 - Digital Photos

Digital photography has been readily available for well over 15 years, and even prior to that, decent scanning was available, so is there any reason for someone to have a 25 pixel square, blurry photo as their Facebook profile? No, not unless they are intentionally trying to to obfuscate their face for *some* nefarious reason.

(By the way, I actually pulled "obfuscate" out of my butt without having to look it up. Yup, three dollar word right *my* blog, and I haven't had any coffee since this am. Clearly, I impress myself...)

What's the funniest movie you saw? For me...Airplane. When Leslie Nielson was at the airport fighting his way thru all sorts of religious groups peddling tracts trying to convert/save him.

So many funny movies that strike me as funny fall flat at other times. There's Something About Mary made me laugh the hardest in the theater. I nearly bust a gut. Watching it now, it is funny, but not *that* funny.

Being There, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Raising Arizona, Animal House are a few funny oldies that come immediately to mind. Airplane is a classic, too!

Last year I was overrun with apricots...I made so many jams, butters, syrups, juices, etc. This year we had a late freeze which killed most of the apricot buds. I have seen 10 apricots, two of which were buggy, a hazard of growing things without pesticide. Bottom line, a bad apricot year. It is probably a good thing that I stopped selling jams on Etsy...I would have no stock! Not sure how well the other fruit crops will do yet. I know there's apples and some peaches, but no idea how many will make it to ripe for us rather than birdie treats.

Thought of the Day 2010 #170 - Geocities-izer

This was sent to me by a friend and it must be shared! Turn your site or any site into a old style, retro fabulous Geocities site with beautiful and trashy moving gifs and backgrounds. Priceless goodness:

Thought of the Day 2010 #169 - Blogspot

Blogspot is becoming the website graveyard of the internet. The hopes and dreams of millions of bloggers died a slow death as they ran out of ideas, ambitions or password memories.

In the early days of the internet, people flocked to Geocities to plant their ideas soundly in the digital realm. Long about 2000, most of those sites gathered dust on the "under construction" moving gifs.

Now, Blogspot has taken on the role as the home of broken dreams. People slowly realize that they are a little late to the blog party and will never make the cash of Dooce or the Pioneer Woman. Maybe they didn't have the same talent or maybe they just didn't have the tenacity. Whatever was missing, it really is kind of sad to see those dreams of greatness die in a pool of apathy.

Thanks to J. from Canada for the cash donation to my site. It was a pleasant surprise in the mail today! Thank you, again. I do appreciate it.

What is your favourite font? And why?

Oh, like potato chips, I can't have just one! I love just looking at fonts...all sorts of fonts. They're often emotive and inspirational. Of course overuse of multiple fonts in a particular document or site drives me batty. Impact is achieved with minimalist usage.

I like going to this site for new font selections: There are a lot of sites like that online, but that's the one I go to.

It's probably easiest to pick a font that I dislike than my favorite. Comic Sans makes my skin crawl.
The sans in the name = no enjoyment. It has nothing to do with the lack of serifs.

Thought of the Day 2010 #167 - Wrong State

I fear I live in the wrong state when individuals applaud others breaking the law because it fits their personal ideals.

As a backstory, a week or so ago a list of illegal immigrants was compiled by a couple of women working for the state unemployment and social service benefits department (name of department changed for definition sake). This list of 1,300 families was sent to various other departments, media and law enforcement. The list included confidential information about these people. The families are receiving benefits because one or more members are legal citizens. More on the story here, if you are interested:

It is wrong on so many levels. Invasion of privacy is just the beginning. Who knows what sort of potential harm can come to the families "outed" on this list if it gets in the hands of militant anti-immigration crazies? Just not right.

Not right and yet there are crazies posting online and communicating in other ways in support of the law breaking, short-sighted idiots making the list. I can't help but think this is akin to outing Jews in Hitler's Germany.

I seriously wonder if the women were paid by an outside group to create the list? They were state workers, so there was probably plenty of room for financial gain. That would add even more drama to an ugly situation.

Thought of the Day 2010 #166 - Cherries

Shortly before leaving for Vegas, I purchased a huge bag of fresh, local cherries. They are so good when fresh, fresh. There was no way to eat all of the cherries, so I decided to do the easiest method of preserving them -- freezing them whole. They make lovely summer snacks that way. Grab a handful and munch 'em in the sunshine. So good!

Thought of the Day 2010 #164 - Did ya...

Did ya happen to listen to Mel Gibson's latest tirade? It is pretty disturbing, but what I find more disturbing it the realization that there are many, many more like him that don't have their racist, sexist leanings exposed. Those quiet haters are the ones that are truly dangerous.

Thought of the Day 2010 #163 - I (heart) McDonald's Real Fruit Smoothies

The wild berry smoothie is the, so good. I like to pretend it is healthy. It is better than ice cream, I believe. Anyway, if you would like to become addicted, the dealers...err...McDonald's restaurants are giving away little "hits" (5 oz cups) of the smoothies on July 22-24. Go ahead, try it...I dare you.

Yup, some more than others.

Thought of the Day 2010 #162 - One Note

I'm a bit bored with the one note fat blog. How many different ways can one say the same thing over and over?? Fat hatred is wrong. Discrimination against fat people is wrong. Fat men are discriminated against. Look here, people discriminated against fat people. Fat women are hated. Mimi hates fat people. Etc, etc, etc.

Get it, got it, and the people who do not get it are not reading your blog. Well, except for Mimi is the only thing she is completely ravenous about.

It's equally as bad to try to slog through diet blogs. I ate this today... I lost an ounce. Today I ate this...I gained an ounce. *pokes eyes out* Do these people have anything better to contemplate in their lives?

While I don't think my blog would ever win any sort of award for writing, I do hope that it is remotely entertaining, occasionally thought provoking, varied, and that is has more than one note....not quite a melody, mind you, but more like a ditty that pops in your head when you least expect it.

Thought of the Day 2010 #161 - Cars

I know we expect a lot from our vehicles, but is there anything more annoying than a car breaking down when you are far from home? (OK, fine, there are a lot more annoying things in this world, but still...) (Oh, and it wasn't my car and I wasn't in the vehicle when it misbehaved, but I was party to picking up the pieces after the beast stopped doing its intended job.)

Thought of the Day 2010 #160 - Dreaming

I have been experiencing some intense dreams this past week. Dramatic, long winded fabulous dreams. The specifics escape me shortly after waking, and all I know is that I want more!! So fun.

Not to sound too obsessed with things that you keep finding, but did you ever locate the owner of that lost pubic hair that came with your brand new dryer? And out of curiosity, what colour was it, because I keep tabs on all of mine.

I have not located the owner...YET. It was black or very dark brown. I could pull it from the garbage and run a DNA analysis on it. Would you care to donate a DNA sample for comparison purposes? We could rule you out fairly quickly and quite definitively that way.

Thought of the Day 2010 #159 - Big Brother Marketing

I can't be the only online shopper who is a bit creeped out by the emails from websites that state, "Yoooohooo, you left something in your online shopping cart. Come back...."
Just creepy, big brotherish marketing. I vow not to return when they pull that shit.

Thought of the Day 2010 #158 - Giant Marshmallows

I bought some giant marshmallows at the grocery store today in preparation for some giant s'mores. While in the checkout line, the guy behind me saw them, scooted past me, scooped up the package and said, "I gotta see these." At first I thought it was amusing that he was compelled to touch them, but then I thought, "What the heck...this dude is fondling my marshmallows." I then realized this was not the first time this thought crossed my mind.

Oh, hey....

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the Photo Selections of the Week were updated today. I filled in the missing weeks, too, so there are quite a few new pictures. For those of you who were waiting, thanks for your patience.

Thought of the Day 2010 #157 - Symbolism

I am pretty concerned when people look for deep hidden meaning in symbols, or put too much stock in them. As an example, a flag is just a piece of cloth. The symbolic representation of the flag could be patriotism, for instance. Mishandling a flag does not equal disrespect for a country, it is solely disrespectful to the fabric. If you loooooove fabric as much as I do, this could be a problem, but no one loves fabric as much as I do, and the dragging of the flag does not bother me, so clearly it should not bother you.

As another example, "666", aka "the sign of the beast." Sometimes numbers fall together in sequence. They just do. "967" could bother me if I choose to let it bother me. It does not. It is just three numbers in a row. If Joey down the street told me that "967" is the symbolic number for evil, I would think 1. Joey is a nut job or 2. Huh, maybe some nut job told Joey that and he choose to believe it. I would not go out of my way to avoid "967" just because Joey said I should. The same logic could and should apply to "666."

These are just two examples, and there are a lot more out there...

If you find yourself overreacting to symbols, take a step back and look for the genuine meaning behind someone's actions or to the symbol in front if you. Remove your emotions before you act from your gut when a symbol is involved. Sometimes a finger is just a finger.

Thought of the Day 2010 #154 - Vegas Again

I just purchased a ticket to fly to Las Vegas for the's BBW Vegas Bash. I'm a bit burnt out on Vegas for the year, but this event should offer some socialization options that my other trips didn't. See y'all there!

Not to sound too obsessed at all with this mystery... but I'll ask again - Did you find any more doll legs in the desert? Maybe a dingo ate your dolly!

I actually think the obsession is fitting. I finally figured out a way to publish the Q appropriately after I asked for you to post again. Sorry to make you ask again...and look obsessed. I do appreciate it!

Thought of the Day 2010 #153 - Drama

Do people who live in interpersonal "drama" really like it? I suspect that they do. If they didn't, they would lead an honest, open existence free of deception, gossip and excessive judgement. I believe those most often embroiled in "drama" are looking for excitement....something to make their otherwise dull lives seem more interesting or somehow more important. It gives them something to talk about...and often they are a subject of the conversation which fills the need of seeming important.

Eh, what do I know, bitch. I know what you are doing, and you and your boyfriend can f*ck off 'cuz I saw you with him, bitch. Oh, and your hair?? It is ugly. Kind of like that bitch she was with last year? Remember? The one with the fat ass and ugly shoes? Yeah. Like that. Don't look at me that way. I know what you said about me. He toooold me what you said....

Cat you are very accomplished seamstress. I love the articles of clothing you have sewn. This brings to mind a few questions. 1. Do you sew for enjoyment or because you have to i.e. do you sew out of frustration when you cannot find something in your

I sew for bothe reasons... I like creating and designing...and it is hard to find exactly what I want in my size, or any size for that matter. I used to sew and design more than I do now, but still design a lot of stuff in my head.

I think your question got cut off...please resubmit what you can. Thanks again!

I believe...

(this is something I just wrote at Dims. I thought it might be worth sharing here, too.)

I believe that dreams are reality and that waking life is actually our brain trying to make sense out of a completely nonsensical existence.

I believe that when I squint really hard, and look into a light, the glowing orby reflections off my eyelashes are an encoded cure for cancer.

I believe that grasshoppers, crickets, and frogs as well as any other nocturnal chatterers are calling out the sequences to all of the universe's secrets written in the stars. We just don't listen very carefully, do we?

(Don't judge until it is disproven!!)

Which software do you use for your design/web work?

Notepad, Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, PhotoShop, FrontPage, Sharepoint Designer. I think that is about it.

Did you find any more doll legs in the desert? Maybe a dingo ate your dolly!

No more matching legs! I always pictured a nasty little boy taking his sister's doll, tearing off the body parts and tossing them carelessly. The idea of a dingo or any critter doing it never crossed my mind. " The dingo ate her dolly!" Maybe Meryl can record that for me?

I no longer have the underwear. In my experience, it doesn't last forever. I no longer have an ass, either. Crying shame, I know. ;-) Thanks for your encouragement, though. With it, I may find my ass again.

Thought of the Day 2010 #152 - Buggy Lotion

Spent a few hours outside tonight and the bugs were loving me! I was wondering if squished bugs might be good for the skin? I scraped quite a few into my face tonight...and, well, I do have a certain glow about me....and the bugs weren't lightning bugs, so don't confuse the potential bioluminescence for my glow!

Are you excited or depressed about the future?

Hmmm...I guess I'm more excited than depressed, but I don't know if excited is the term I'd use. Maybe optimistic instead? The future is unknown and fairly malleable, so that makes it potentially fabulous!

Thought of the Day 2010 #151 - Crazy Customer Service

The pharmacy assistant who argued with me over a prescription that I didn't order, failed to do a simple thing -- apologize for his mistake. A simple apology can go a looooong way in making a frustrated customer happy again. Jeers to Walgreens for having such a numb nut on staff (and for the lame ass yet funny urinal suggestion on their website) and to the assistant for being a numb nut.

Welcome, David, to the Follower ranks. Of which there are two now. It is a VERY elite group with special privileges!

Have you ever encountered anyone you were totally sure was a disturbed and possibly dangerous individual? Either in person or online? And you were sure you'd see them on COPS eventually?

Definitely! I have met quite a few over the years. I don't think I've ever met a Hannibal Lechter, but have definitely met plenty of mentally disturbed individuals. Then there are the people who just look evil...something missing in their souls. Not a lot of pure evil folk, compared with the number of mentally ill, but more than I really want to know about.

Good question, Buffie!

Product Placement

I was ordering a prescription refill on, and this sweet suggestion came up as something that may interest me. What the? First, the picture *is* pretty eye-catching. Secondly, what the?? How could this possibly interest me, I mean aside from the curiosity and blog worthy potential?? Do you think they sell a lot of these for guys who don't wish to miss *one second* of World Cup action?? I suppose it is a wee (heheh) step above wearing adult diapers. Oh, in case you are interested in this male urinal, the product can be found here. Be sure you scroll down for customer comments. I don't know if they are legit or not, but well worth the price of admission.

Thought of the Day 2010 #150 - Darkness Falls

They come at night, mostly.

I was sitting out back in a lawn chair amongst tall weeds and was quite certain that the nocturnal bugs were on the move. I kept my arms and legs moving, and swayed my body back and forth. If you didn't know me, you would have assumed I was a disturbed autistic. Luckily, I didn't feel anything crawl on me, but I looked to my right, and on a white plastic lawn chair, there clearly were critters quickly moving across the seat. I love summer evenings! I really do. There is something magical about the seemingly endless darkening blue sky. The bugs just temper the beauty so that it is not overwhelming.

What's growing in your garden this year?

Tomatoes(roma and celebrity), corn, peppers (bell, Anaheim, jalapeƱo), beans (edamame aka soy, string, Lima), zucchini, pumpkins, cucumbers(pickling, lemon, burpless), spaghetti squash, asparagus, peas, snow peas, onions, potatoes. I am sure I have forgotten something. My hubby is the gardener. I help a little with the planting and buying of the seeds, plants, but he does most of the work. And it is a looooot of work weeding and watering which is done through irrigation channels. We could definitely scale back and just farm an acre or less and still have enough for us, instead we give at least 50% away to family and friends. Oh, and all of this garden...and there is still all of the fruit trees and bushes - apricot, peaches, raspberries, apples, plums. What's cool is that we garden completely organically - no pesticides or herbicides or chemical fertilizers. So, it's very healthy produce. It also means that once in a while we will run into a bug or two when washing the produce off, but all in all, it's not bad.

Thought of the Day 2010 #148 - Sprinkles

Sprinkles, the flavorless yet colorful decoration on ice cream and donuts, is to blame for the obesity "epidemic." It has also been shown to cause cancer in lab chickens. Pass it on.

( This is my secret plot to rid the world of these nasty bits. Keep that part secret as you pass on this important revelation. Thanks!)

Have you ever considered weight loss surgery? I've thought about it but don't like the idea of having my insides rearranged.

Oh, hell no. I've heard too many stories of complications and miserable results to even think of it. I have heard, too, that most wls recipients will gain on average 80 percent of their pre-surgery weight back. It is no miracle. Just like diet plans, it is just a tool to try to lose weight, and as with other tools, most do not work long term nor do they work for all people. The major difference is that diets are reversible, and most surgeries are not.

Thought of the Day 2010 #147 - Cursed

After curing my computer of the virus, I had a full day of work ahead of me. I logged into work and I was about half an hour in and my cable connection dropped. Completely dropped. No Internet, no phone and no television. All. Day. So much for catching up with work after having lost so many hours due to the virus. I give up!
