Rambutan - Scary Fruit

When in doubt, buy the scary fruit, just to try it. It can't be poisonous, right? I mean, they wouldn't sell it if it was, right? Well, you know, aside from all of those recent food recalls, I mean. So, there, next to the mini pineapples (gotta love those! They're soooo cute!) was a bunch of furry "Rambutan" fruit. $5.99/lb. Kinda pricey as far as fruit goes, but hey, you only live once. Oh, and c'mon, they're SMMMMMAAAALL. I bought five of 'em and it probably only weighed 1/4 lb. A cheap food risk!

I get home, look up how to eat 'em online and am a wee bit scared of the white egg-like center. Quite freakish, really. If I were to imagine a fruit from another planet which would harbor little creatures, this would be it. (I must remember it for Halloween next year!) The texture of the "egg" inside was a bit like...hmmm...a hard boiled egg...or maybe an overly Jello'd Jell-o jiggler. The flavor wasn't intense at all. Very sweet, but no ZIIING. Let's say if I'm stranded on a Malaysian isle, I could eat these to survive. Otherwise, hmmm, I'll pass.

Oh I love those! Yeah, not a big zing but I like the flavor. I'm not sure what the difference is between these and lychee nuts (maybe just a different variety?). My kids refuse to try them since they look sort of like eyeballs. Probably be good for a Halloween party ;-)

Yeah, I thought they seemed similar to the lychee, too.
I think when I was a kid I would have passed it up based upon looks, too. Now, gimme an ugly fruit...I'll give it a whirl. :-)

Are ugly fruits good? Because I keep seeing them but the price puts me off. They seem sort of expensive for what looks like an extra pithy grapefruit ;-)

Oh! Sorry I should have said "ugly lookin'" I actually haven't tried Ugly fruit either. Sorry for the confusion!

LOL! You know, after I wrote that I wondered if you meant ugly fruit or Ugly Fruit. Guess I'll have to get off my butt and actually try one ;-)

They look like fuzz balls from under a bed on a wood floor. I suppose you could use them for pillow filler after eating the insides. Claudia

After they dried out, I think they'd make awesome hats (or wigs?!) for the "little people" playset toys. :-)

im malaysian and i stumbled upon your blog when i was looking up artemia salina for a biology report.

i love rambutans. but i do think they're ugly too. here are some other freaky fruits that grow in malaysia: buah nona, durian, nangka, cempedak, pulasan(something that looks like rambutan but isnt), dragon fruit, mangosteens and jambu air.

that's all i can think of. i'm not sure if these fruits are malaysian per se, but they usually sell them at my local market so i'll assume they are.

Happy freaky fruit eating!
